Embracing the Pivot

Pivot. You may have heard the term - it is popular now.. So, what does it mean’?
In current business and management speak, it is the ability to learn as you go and correct your direction in mid-course.

Pivoting is merely moving in another direction, often as a solution to a problem. The goal has not changed, but the tactics are different from before. This makes the whole concept of pivoting vital to maintaining an organization's vision. Progress and improvement are intimately tied to trying new things.

Pivoting in a management context may lead to a shift in the strategic direction of an organization. Usually the decision to pivot is the result of competitive changes or new findings about the living or business environment.

"When people say ‘you’re fearless,’ it’s not about the absence of fear. It’s about acknowledging the fear and choosing to face it anyway or move forward anyway. It takes guts and gumption to pivot towards something you’ve always wanted to do. Facing the fear builds a foundational level for you so as you level up, you can revert back to how you faced another fear in order to keep moving forward. Embrace it, pivot and continue leveling up."
Dr. Cheryl Robinson, in her podcast "Embrace the Pivot"

You may say, "Well, this just sounds like evolution". In some ways, it is like evolution. But, true evolution is driven entirely by immediate outside forces, and in nature can require a lot of dying. At DMi, we prefer to take a mindful approach to change, one that takes past, present and future forces into account. Change is often difficult, but when it is mindful and guided, as a Pivot, it can be much less painful and sometime even joyful.
